How To Fix Flickering Lights In The House ?

Flickering of light is defined as turning on and off with a random or irregular timing, which does not seem to repeat. A slight flicker or very brief dimming that corresponds to appliances turning on and off can be normal, but if it has become more pronounced, can be severely hazardous.

Now, the question arises, what causes a power to surge? Here are some common reasons for power surge and some suggested solutions. However, two broader reasons for the light fluctuation is defective home wiring or the appliance.

First and the foremost step is to examine the connections between the bulb and its holder. For a loose connectivity, the bulb will constantly flicker till the time you switch it off. Finding any loose connections, tighten them quickly.

In case, the flickering still continues, we may change the bulb. Sometimes, the fluctuations occur when the bulb is about to go off completely. A faulty electric cord may also be the reason for the lights to flicker. See, if the cable is not broken and change it, if so. Check for the tightness of the connection between the plug and the socket to which an appliance is connected.

Faulty socket to which an appliance is connected also cause the flickering. If this is the case, call an electrician and replace the socket for a new one.

Many loads have ‘inrush current,’ and draw lots more current when they are first turned on; on startup they will cause significant voltage drop in the supply. Usually, this causes the light to flicker.

Sometimes, it happens that all the connectors are fine, all the plugs and sockets are intact but, the appliance connected is problematic. For example, on putting our electric motor on, it draws excessive current because it has a bad bearing and the motion is too hard. Thus, there is heavy voltage drop and a flicker is noticed.

Call an electrician if you are unable to determine the cause of the flickering lights. There may be a problem with the wiring in the home that requires the services of a certified electrician. You may protect your fluctuation sensitive appliances through surge protectors.
