Benefits Of Installing A Circuit Breaker Unit

Often, the faulty circuit is responsible for the electrical short-circuits which in turn damages the costly home appliances. A circuit breaker plays a vital role in preventing such a loss. Circuit breaker is a device that shuts off the power supply on account of an error in any of the electrical circuits.

Everybody knows that when current flows through any substance including a wire in our case, it generates heat. The amount of heat produced is directly proportional to the amount of current flowing. Also, flowing current from a wire creates a magnetic field around the conducting medium. Higher the current flow, more is the magnetic field. These are the two basic principles of modern day circuit breakers.

Circuit breaker has a switch-like handle which enables you to interact with the breaker device. The switch can have as many as four positions: ‘On’, ‘Off’, ‘Tripped’ and ‘Reset’. It is not difficult to find the on and off positions but tripped and reset positions are a bit complicated to switch to. To trip the breaker, you need to switch the handle in the middle of the ‘on’ and ‘off’ position. Moreover, it can be marked red as well for easy interface. To reset the breaker, glide down the switch towards ‘off’ position gently and a clicking sound authenticates the resetting of the breaker.

Before you proceed on to the next step (resetting and turning on the breaker switch), fix the problem that is causing the circuit-breaker to shift towards the off position. The faulty appliance should either be turned off or unplugged in order to maintain the normal operation of the unit.

A switch and a breaker have got many things in common. Both of them have toggle handles, levers, springs and many other circuitries. Also, both use a bimetallic switch to determine the overheating of the device. This is a very important aspect as this switch can warn you before the occurrence of a mishap.

Circuit-breakers are convenient because they have same current ratings as fuses. However, the difference is that one can use breakers over and over again by resetting them.

Due to this revolutionary feature, you do not need any spare breaker for an emergency situation.

Circuit-breaker not only saves you money but also protects your valuable electrical appliances.

Disadvantages Of Incorporating Outdated Electrical Wires

If you have not replaced your electrical wires since 20 years, you should change it immediately. Do not wait for an accident to occur and commence the replacement work as soon as possible. The average time span for standard electrical wires is around 18-20 years and 20-22 years for high quality wires. It is always advised to change the electrical wiring fixtures of your home two years prior to the specified expiry date.

Besides the lifespan of the wires, the total power load of your home also increases. In addition, you would have purchased many new electrical appliances in the last few years to add to the power load of the home. In order to make your appliances work better and longer, give them the appropriate environment. If you do not want to handle the job of replacement then you can hire a licensed professional to do it for you.

First of all, check the rating of your old wires. Rating refers to the ability of the wire to sustain a maximum power load. Beyond this maximum limit, the use of wire can prove dangerous as it can lead to short-circuit or can catch fire. Choose a higher rated cable to sustain the extra load due to the installation of new appliances in your home.

A little knowledge about the important parts of the electrical fixtures would be an added advantage for the members of the home. Consumer units, switches etc. are the electrical fixtures that every member of the home should be aware of. Consumer unit is responsible for the distribution of electricity to the panels installed in the home spaces. MCB or Miniature Circuit Breaker is used to protect the costly appliances from electrical faults.

Before replacing the electrical wiring fixture of your home, you need to know a little bit about the existing installation. If your electrical load is exceeding the normal value in the last few months or years then it is better to move on to a high capacity wire that can sustain the increased load. Electrical load can increase due to the installation of a new appliance that you have purchased in the last few years.

Estimating the current power load of the home would be an added advantage as the power load could have increased due to the installation of some new appliances. Even the installation of a fan would increase the power load. With an increased power load, the wires should be capable of sustaining that load.

If you are not a professional and your skills are not up to the top level then avoid the commencement of the job without the guidance of a professional electrician. Electricity does not spare those who try to play with it. Hence, extra caution is mandatory.

Replacing your electrical cables at recommended time intervals not only saves you bucks but also saves you from the risks of electric tragedies.

Handy Testing Tools For An Electrician

With the help of electrical testing equipments, an electrician is able to get responses and signals from an electrical device under test. These signals and responses give vital information about the integrity of a particular circuit. Such electrical testing devices are widely available in all leading stores. Here is the list of some of the primary testing equipments used by the electricians.

An analog multi-meter holds its own significance in the regular scheme of things. The main purpose of using an analog multi-meter is to determine the voltage, resistance, frequency and signal power associated with a circuit. The unit for measuring electrical potential is volt, for current it is ampere and resistance is measured in ohms. Short-circuits can easily be uncovered using an analog multi-meter.

Second testing equipment in the list is a digital multi-meter. It possesses a good wiring diagram and an effective multi-meter is capable of finding the cause of any electrical problem. A digital multi-meter provides you with one of the most crucial features, ‘accuracy’. Accuracy is crucial when you are testing the equipments for voltage, current and resistant. This is one reason why digital meters are preferred over the analog ones.

Data logger is a device that is used to record various data values at different instances of time. It also has a built-in sensor that can test the cause of the electrical problem.

Insulation tester is used to test the consistency of the windings or cables in electric motors, switchgears, transformers and other electrical setups. Next device is a power quality analyzer. This device is used to gauge electrical power signals. It also proves handy in supporting the load’s ability to function appropriately with electrical power. It takes count of the various factors such as AC voltage, AC current and frequency.

An electrical meter test equipment is used to test the exact quantity of energy recorded (which is generally measured in kilowatt-hours or cubic feet). Also, it keeps track of the energy supplied to all the business/residential areas.

Before buying any of these testing tools, study the consistency and effectiveness of each one of these as costliest is not always the best. Choose a brand offers guarantee of replacement if the purchased tool malfunctions under the guarantee period.

With such devices under your belt, you make consider yourself fully prepared to take on any electrical problem.

Specifications For Replacing A Fluorescent Bulb

Long ago, you did not have enough choices when it came to the replacement of a fluorescent light bulb. However, modern day market is flooded with a huge variety of fluorescent light bulbs. Such a huge variety makes it difficult for a novice to choose the appropriate replacement fixture. In order to replace a light bulb in correct manner, you have to follow certain guidelines.

In the early stages, fluorescent lights were only available in long tubes. As the time progressed, more varieties came into the scene. Today, fluorescent lights are available in different shapes and shades like U-shape, Circular-shape etc. Basically, a U-shaped tube is used in the locations like under the cabinets where they are placed in ballast at one end. In case of circular bulbs, they are accommodated in sockets.

Fluorescent bulbs are used for providing bright, white and glaring lights. They are available in vast colors and in different shades of white.

While replacing the fluorescent light bulb, never try to alter the size of the bulb. Always replace the old bulb with the same sized bulb. Moreover, the wattage of the bulb should never exceed the maximum permissible limit. Increasing the wattage beyond the recommended limit would encourage overheating in the ballast and would lead to a possible fire accident.

Among the main parts of the fluorescent bulb, a bulb holder, ballast, a switch and a starter are quite significant. While the holder is responsible for holding the bulb in place, switch is responsible for turning on and turning off the bulb. Ballast and starter provide the necessary electric current to the bulb that ionizes the gas inside the bulb to illuminate the bulb.

How can you determine the appropriate time for the replacement of a fluorescent light bulb? Answer to this question is quite difficult as fluorescent bulbs do not show any signs of ‘burn out’ like in incandescent lamps. When one side of the light becomes darker than the other, it may be the time to arrange a replacement.

To fix this problem, check the bulb in ballast and make sure that it is working fine.

Always adopt safety measures while working. Turn off the main power supply to the ballast or socket before replacing the bulb or tube. Never try to insert the tube forcefully into the ballast or socket as it may damage the setting.

Steps To Revive The Appearance Of Your Refrigerator

An old refrigerator unit disturbs the beatification scheme of your home to a large extent. If you do not have enough money in your pocket to buy a new refrigerator then you can opt for a repainting job. You can repaint your refrigerator on your own without hiring any professional. You would need a special paint to complete the paint job with conviction.

First thing to understand is that you are not required to change the backside color of the refrigerator because it is black by default. Black color is used on the backside because it complements the operation of the coils in radiating energy. You only need to paint the top, front and sides of the refrigerator.

Choose the color with the beautification theme in mind and purchase this special paint from a local paint shop. The quality of this paint makes it heat-resistible and cold-resistible.

Clean the refrigerator thoroughly to remove dust, stains or smoke traits completely. This step is mandatory in order to provide a smooth surface to the upcoming layer of paint. A smooth surface ensures stronger binding between the surface and the paint.

If the body of your refrigerator has any nick, scratch or traits of rust then you need to clear them before moving ahead with the proceedings. Grab sandpaper and start sanding the spoiled surface. While sanding the odd spots on the refrigerator body, make sure that the paint work of the refrigerator does not suffer any damage.

Put masking tape on the handles of the refrigerator to protect them from paint. Do not use regular masking tape as it is much stickier and it would be difficult to remove it after the paintwork. Instead, use a special masking tape manufactured for such jobs. Use a painter’s masking tape to cover the rubber seals that are left exposed.

Open the paint can or spray bottle after reading the instructions carefully. Begin the painting work once you have fully understood the technique. Remove the masking tape after a while to launch the new look of the refrigerator.

With a few simple steps, you can also provide a new look to your refrigerator.

Troubleshooting: Common Air-Conditioner Problems

Most of the homeowners choose an expert to repair even the simplest of the problems associated with air-conditioners. In actual scenario, such problems are easy and the wise homeowners can diagnose the problem to a large extent. By doing so, you not only save some money but also gain some knowledge about the appliance.

80 percent of the air-conditioner problems are caused due to a chocked filter. If your appliance is not blowing cool air then a chocked filter may be the reason. Also, most of you know the right technique of unclogging the filters. Clogged filter makes it harder for the fins of the condenser to breathe. Since they receive no air, they fail to deliver cold air to you.

Another possibility could be that the dust from the filter screen may have settled on the condenser fins. If it happens then the accumulation of debris checks the proper working of the condenser fins which in turn affects the efficiency of your air-conditioner. Hence, clean the fins of the appliance on a regular basis.

One of the reasons for the unavailability of cold air is the low pressure of the Freon inside the compressor. Normally, the pressure of Freon onside the condenser should be somewhere around 65-70 PSI. You can check the pressure of Freon using a pressure gauge. In case the pressure of Freon is not up to the mark, avoid filling it on your own. There are specialized companies who fill the Freon gas. Avail their services as inhalation of Freon can create health problems for you.

In case the thermostat is set to a low level and you are not getting cold air, look for the condenser fan’s motor. Due to burnt-out or loose wires, the fan motor stops its normal routine work.

If you have a split type air-conditioner installed and the outside unit is not working then it may be accredited to a burnt condenser fan. For safety reasons, the outside unit of the air-conditioner should be repaired by a licensed expert only.

If the inside unit is running with a faulty outside unit then the condenser in the outside unit would heat up. To cool down this increased temperature, the outside unit would shut down to avoid any further damage.

To maintain the normal operation of an electrical appliance, regular inspection is mandatory.

Maintaining A Microwave Oven

Microwave oven is amongst the electrical items that are small but the tricky errors can be solved without the need of an expert. There are problems associated with such devices that keep coming back. Usually, these problems can be tackled without the help of an expert. However, a word or two from an expert would prove handy while repairing an electrical device.

Replacing the handle of the microwave needs no special skills and it calls for a careful action only. First of all, get a putty knife and take away the trim around the door. If the trim is held in place by a tab then remove it carefully as these tabs can crack easily. When the screws holding the handle in place are visible, you can unscrew them to replace the handle.

There are situations when the microwave stops working because food inside the microwave catches fire. In that situation, look for the flame oven thermostat safety switch. This switch allows you to turn off the microwave in extreme conditions. These switches are available in every microwave oven nowadays.

Replacing the bulb of your microwave is also fairly simple. The only thing to remember is to switch off the power supply to the microwave before commencing the replacement work. If the power supply is not turned off, you may very well damage the smart board circuits of the microwave.

If microwave produces sparks when you are using it then it is due to the splashed food that has carbonized in the wave guard area. To avoid the trouble, keep your microwave neat and clean from insides and outsides especially around the wave guard area.

If the microwave display screen is counting down and the inside light is also glowing, but it is not heating then check the door switch of the microwave. You can check the switch using an ohm-meter. Beforehand, discharge the current using a metal screwdriver which has an insulated handle. Now, attach the probes of the ohm-meter to the end of the wire while setting the scale to the lowest scale. If the needle hardly moves in the display of the ohm-meter then your switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Always make sure that the microwave is switched off before you start to work on its wirings.

Follow these simple steps to easily resolve the common problems associated with a microwave oven.

Guide To The Replacement Of An Electrical Light Switch

An electrical light switch starts creating mess after sometime and replacement seems to be the only solution available. It is one of those tasks that you can complete without the need of a professional. Before you run ahead with the project, gather some information on replacing a faulty electrical light switch.

Switches are of three types: single pole types, three way switches and four way switches. A single pole switch is employed to power up the lighting in a single room, three way switches are used to manage the lighting fixtures in two locations and four way switches are used to operate the lighting in three-plus locations.

There are three types of switches namely the single pole types, the three-way types and the four-way switches. Different types of switches are used for different conditions. A single pole switch is used to operate the lighting fixtures located in a single room. A three way switch can operate lighting fixtures in two different locations whereas a four-way switch is used to control the lighting fixtures of three or more locations at a time.

If you are not aware about the type of switches you are using then take out the switch from the board after turning off the main power supply. Take the switch along with you to the electrical shop and ask the salesman for the correct type.

Now, turn off the main supply of the current and unscrew the cover plate of the light switch using the a screwdriver. Put the screws and the cover plate aside.

With the help of a voltage tester, check whether the switch is working up to the mark or not. Use a screwdriver to unwire the switch from the board. At this time, note down the sequence and color of the wires in your notepad.

Before you place the new switch, test it for its accuracy with the help of a voltage tester. Unscrew the old switch from the board and unwire it. Be careful while writing down the sequence of the wires as they are attached. Now, place the new switch in place and connect the wires as specified in the notepad. Before screwing the cover plate back on to the wall, test the working of the switch.

Install the new switch in place of the old switch and connect the wires. Switch on the main power supply and test the working of the switch before replacing the wall-light switch cover.

How To Arrange Lights In A Pond ?

A pool in the court at the back of your house not just provides you with a place to relax but also gives you a beautiful and nice look to it. This phenomenon dims down with the downing of the sun.

Adding lighting to water features in a yard or garden is one of the most attractive things you can do in your home landscape. Explore some ways to make your pond attractive with lights.

The tools you might need while arranging the lights in the pond are floating solar pond lights, floating lighted pond fountain, electric or solar, underwater pond light with transformer and electricity source.

With all the above things ready, we can easily begin to light up the pond. We now leave in the social light to float over the surface of the pond. These moving lights need no timer or switch. These lights are left to move freely over the surface of the pond and it illuminates with the fall of night, with the energy provided by the sun light during the day.

A huge variety in the size and shapes of lights are available in the market. Some comes in the shape of water lilies or other aquatic plants. These are great in highlighting around a feature of the pond, such as an attractive rock or boulder, a beautiful planting of unusual aquatic plants, or a sculpture.

Place a floating lighted fountain in the center or deepest part of the pond for the double benefit of a light show with aeration. Fountains can give a variety of spray and light shows, come with control panels, timers, and cords, and will need an electric source and an anchor. Solar floating lighted fountains are a bit more expensive but worth the time-saving installation effort that is saved, as well as the electricity.

To have a more exciting lighting effect, install the lights in the pond just around the edges. Well, the spacing between the lights depends upon the intensity of light needed. For that you must need a light fixture, cables, fastener and the transformer.

For an underwater light cable to be plugged, we would require an outdoor GFCI receptacle. An electric box is to be fixed on a pole near the pond so that we can reach it easily. This GFCI must be covered with a waterproof cover to keep the lights plugged in.

How To Fix An Outdoor Electrical Outlet ?

Do you have any problematic electrical outlets? Well, this is very usual to have problems with one of the electrical outlets at home. When you try to plug in or unplug something, or even just wiggled the cord, the entire circuit would short out, leaving you with no lights in rooms, no electrical outlets in two rooms and gasp, no computer.

It is neither easy nor economical to fetch the services of electricians to repair these faulty electrical outlets. Moreover repairing an erratic electrical outlet is that easy a job that can be accomplished by any individual and thus, all should have that know how. To make this task still easier, some of the tools and equipments such as screwdriver, GFCI outlet and wire cutter must be readily available.

Turn off the circuit breaker that powers the outlet. Verify the electricity is shut off by plugging in a radio or lamp to test the outlet.

Loosen and remove the exterior screws holding the cover over the outlet. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws. Remove the cover and set it and the screws aside for reuse.

Remove the two screws holding the outlet to the metal wall box at the top and bottom of the outlet. Now you need to disconnect the outlet from the wires coming out from the metal box. For that, loosen the wires from the wire nuts. Since the outlet has gone damaged, just throw it away.

Using a wire cutter cut these wires about two inches in case it is found that wires have either been damaged or soiled. Strip the insulation of two wires at about one inch. Third wire needs no insulation stripping as it is a bare copper wire used for earth.

Replacing the damaged outlet with GFCI outlet would be more appropriate. Connect the GFCI outlet to the wiring using the screwdriver. Insert the black wire under the brass screw, and tighten the screw down on the wire holding it in place. Insert the white wire under the silver screw, and the bare wire under the green screw, and tighten the screw.

Push the wiring back into the electrical box, line up the holes in the top and bottom of the outlet with the holes in the top and bottom of the electrical box, and insert the screws and tighten them down to hold the outlet in place. Replace the cover over the outlet box, insert the screws in the hole and secure the cover to the box. Turn the power back to the outlet at the main circuit panel.
