Can You Really Make Money From Twitter?
Some time back I decided to test the theory if I could make money from twitter. So I did just that. As a background I had 6500 followers the day of the test, not a big number but hey bigger than 6. This took me 8 weeks to grow and now I am putting on around 1000 a week. Important to note that these are all in my niche. Anyway back to the point.
To keep the test simple I decided that i would just tweet an affiliate link. That way, I did not put it anywhere else, I could see the stats from the affiliate site. What I tweeted was what I wrote was @ Matt Bacak and Shawn Casey together, what more could you want? to make money on line. Go here http://www.ipcgold.com/ad/2079/CD74819. I sent it out six times so to cover all time zones.
The result was I got 36 clicks and no sales, which is a click rate of 0.005%. I did it on a Saturday night so a lot of people would be online and tweeting. So what does this prove?
Well I believe that twitter at best is shotgun marketing. To explain shotgun marketing, it is shooting a wide blast and hoping the something runs into the bullet. I personally prefer sniper marketing, that is you see and know your target. Therefore with twitter, the reaction rate is low. Now you might say that this is only one test. You would be right, except for I have targeted my followers, most have used the term internet marketing, in their tweets at some point. So you would expect that I would get a large reaction, which did not happen. Lets look at some of the possibilities.
1. its Saturday night everyone is out.
2. No one could care less, well my followers are IM based and the product is an IM one. So that should have been a runner.
The final reason is possible the most logical. People have some many tweets, they can only read some of them. I get over 1200 tweets every few minutes, I can’t read them all. So this is reducing the effectiveness of trying to make money on Twitter. But the reason it bombed was simple, not enough tweets. You need to tweet every few minutes to have a great campaign.
A great thing for twitter is you can build relationships. The more people see your name, the more they get to know you, the more you will sell. Of course another great way is… make a course on twitter.
